When I began processing wool in 2000. I needed to have small lots and long wool processed into batts. There weren't any mills who could handle lots under 100 pounds and the majority, would not process Lincoln. I was stuck. I bought a manual drum carder and was determined to get my 15 pounds of fleece washed, dried and drum carded. It proved to be more of a chore than I had expected. First was the smell of dirty fleece washing in the house, then was the mess of wet fleece drying, to compound everything was the shoulder breaking chore of hand turning on the drum carder. I decided to purchase a good sized electric drum carder and 1 very old top load washer. I could wash, dry and batt my own fleece. We have upgraded since then and with many local and mail order customers. The Mill at Newton Farm caters wool processing services to the fiber enthusiast with their single fleece to process or the serious spinner ,who has too many to count, fleeces.
